A possible reunion special for the hit '90s British TV series Absolutely Fabulous may be in the works, the show's star Joanna Lumley (who can currently be seen on Broadway in La Bete) told Broadway.com. "Next year is our 20th anniversary of the first season and there might be a special or something," Lumley said. "We can’t let the occasion go unmarked. I’m praying that we can all get together. Knowing [show creator and co-star Jennifer Saunders] it will be fabulous."
Absolutely Fabulous first aired on Britain's BBC in 1992 and featured Lumley and Saunders as boozy best friends Patsy Stone and Edina Monsoon. The fashion-obsessed, middle-aged pair spent their time drinking, smoking and snorting anything that came their way as Monsoon's daughter (played by Julia Sawalha) disapprovingly looked on. The show ran for five seasons, airing intermittently until 2003.
"People have a great love for her because she was so disgusting, selfish, bad-mannered and vile," Lumley said of the character that won her three BAFTA Awards. "Patsy was just divine to play, as you could imagine. It doesn’t matter how old we get because in some of the episodes we fast-forwarded to Patsy and Edina being about 112 years old. They’re utterly puffed up, revolting and in wheelchairs, so it doesn’t matter at what age we do it because we know they’re still alive, old and plugged into vodka machines."
Lumley even hinted that a planned theatrical adaptation of the show was once in the works. "There was conversation of doing something. You would’ve needed most of the cast, though, and everybody—Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks and June Whitfield—works nonstop in film, TV and stage. It was really hard to get us all together."
Lumley currently stars in La Bete as a hot-tempered princess opposite Tony winners Mark Rylance and David Hyde Pierce. La Bete is currently in previews at the Music Box Theatre and opens October 14.
